Cold work tool steels

As the demands on a tool increase, choosing the right steel becomes more and more important. What are those demands? The tool must be sufficiently resistant to wear. Its performance must be reliable, and it must not fail through premature chipping, cracking or plastic deformation. The best tool economy — the lowest possible tool cost, including maintenance, per part produced — can be achieved only when the tool steel is right for the application.

Uddeholm Arne

Uddeholm Arne is a low-alloy, general-purpose cold work tool steel with excellent machinability. It is very well suited to short production runs in a variety of cold-work applications. Because it is an oil-hardening steel, it should be used only for small tools (wall thickness below 50 mm). This material corresponds to grade 1.2510/AISI O1/HVG.

Uddeholm Calmax

Uddeholm Calmax is a medium-alloy tool steel for short and medium production runs where very good resistance to cracking is required. Its properties make it a strong cold work tool steel for high-productivity blanking and forming of sheet.

Uddeholm Carmo

Uddeholm Carmo is a medium-alloy tool steel for blanking car-body parts or other large structural components where the cutting edges are flame- or induction-hardened. Its chemical composition is the same as Uddeholm Calmax, but Uddeholm Carmo is supplied pre-hardened. The material corresponds to grade 1.2358.

Uddeholm Formax

Uddeholm Formax is a low-alloy carbon steel used in the as-supplied condition as a holder material for tools, moulds and other machine parts. It corresponds to grade SS 2172.

Uddeholm Rigor

Uddeholm Rigor is a medium-alloy tool steel with good resistance to both abrasive and adhesive wear and very good resistance to cracking. That makes it a general-purpose tool steel for medium production runs in cold-work applications. It corresponds to grade 1.2363/AISI A2/EN X100CrMoV5-1.

Uddeholm Sleipner

Uddeholm Sleipner is a high-alloy tool steel with a wide range of properties. It is a very good base material for various surface treatments. Those properties have made Uddeholm Sleipner a versatile conventional tool steel for medium-volume cold-work production.

Uddeholm Sverker 3

This is a high-alloy steel for medium and long production runs where very high resistance to abrasive wear is required. Uddeholm Sverker 3 contains large carbides, which provide that abrasive-wear resistance but reduce resistance to cracking. The material corresponds to grade X210CrW12.

Uddeholm Sverker 21

This is a high-alloy tool steel used for medium production volumes where good resistance to abrasive wear is generally required. 12% chromium steel is the most common cold work tool steel. The material corresponds to grade AISI D2 / EN X153CrW12, which is quite close to grade 1.2379.

Uddeholm UHB 11

Uddeholm UHB 11 is a low-alloy carbon steel used in the as-supplied condition as a holder-plate material, or for fixtures for tools, moulds and other machine parts. It can also be used hardened and tempered for simpler tools. The material corresponds to grade 1.1730.

Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean

Uddeholm Vanadis 4 Extra SuperClean is a high-alloy powder-metallurgy tool steel for long production runs where high resistance to adhesive wear and cracking is required. It is the best tool steel for long runs where cracking is the main problem.

Uddeholm Vanadis 23 SuperClean

Uddeholm Vanadis 23 SuperClean is a high-alloy powder-metallurgy high-speed steel for long production runs that demand very high resistance to mixed wear (abrasive and adhesive) or where the working surface is at risk of severe plastic deformation. The material is close to grade 1.3344/AISI M3:2/EN HS 6-5-3.

Uddeholm Vanadis 30 SuperClean

Uddeholm Vanadis 30 is a cobalt-alloyed high-performance high-speed steel. The cobalt addition improves hot strength. Hot strength and resistance to plastic deformation are key properties when making cutting tools from high-speed steel. The material corresponds to grade 1.3207/M3:2+Co/EN HS 10-4-3-10.

Uddeholm Vanadis 60 SuperClean

Uddeholm Vanadis 60 is a high-quality, high-alloy powder-metallurgy high-speed steel containing 10.5% cobalt. It is very suitable for cutting tools that must meet particularly high demands on wear resistance and hot hardness. The material corresponds to grade 1.3241.
